The hands behind Newgrange Stonework

A decade of dry stone craft, from Tasmania's hiking trails to Colorado's backyards.

Newgrange Stonework LLC is owned and operated by Brendan Monahan, who learned the craft of dry stone masonry more than a decade ago in Tasmania, Australia. It started on hiking trail construction, where Tasmania's wet climate demands sturdy, long-lasting stonework that can hold a slope and shed water without ever failing.

Hikers on those trails kept asking the same question: could this kind of stonework be built in a backyard? That question became the company. Stone is one of the oldest building materials there is, and dry stone construction — no mortar, no shortcuts — brings that structural art form home.

Fast forward several years, and Brendan has since traveled to Ireland to see the source of the company's name firsthand — the 5,000-year-old passage tomb at Newgrange, its corbelled dry stone roof still watertight after five millennia. Studying that kind of stonework in person, and paying homage to a craft this old, is part of what keeps every wall built here held to the same standard.

With that passion, every project starts with time spent understanding what a space actually needs, not just what it should look like. Whether that means a run of steps, a terraced slope, or a retaining wall that has to do real structural work, the same time-tested method applies: stone set by hand, fitted to hold itself, built to outlast the people who built it.

Newgrange Stonework is proudly based in Denver, Colorado, and is locally bonded and insured.
